No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
